Earth DayEarth Day is an annual day on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network (EDN), with the mission to make Earth Day into a day of action which changes human behavior and provokes policy changes. Here are some interesting facts you may not have known about Earth Day:

  1. It is EXTREMELY Global: Earth Day is celebrated in more than 192 countries every year. To give some perspective, there are 193 members of the United Nations, and the US State Department recognizes 195 independent countries around the world.
  2. It is Older than You Might Think: Although you might think Earth Day is a result of the recent environmental movement and can be attributed to recent events, its roots go back to 1970. The first one was proposed for March 21, 1970 at a 1969 UNESCO Conference in San Francisco. However, a month later, a separate Earth Day was founded by US Senator Gaylord Nelson as a teach-in on April 22, 1970.
  3. Long-Term Leadership: Denis Hayes, founder of the Earth Day Network and the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international 20 years later in 1990, organizing events in 141 nations. Denis Hayes still remains involved as a guiding force, acting as the Board Chair on the Board of Directors of the Earth Day Network.
  4. EDN Initiatives REALLY ARE Impactful: Although many celebrate Earth Day one day a year, the Earth Day Network’s initiatives go way beyond the day. They work on programs to green schools and promote environmental education, create global conferences that engage civil society, corporate, and government leaders on the importance of new and sustainable energies, and accelerate and promote environmental programs to help green the planet.
  5. Earth Day has its own Anthem: Earth Day has an anthem set to the tune of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” Feeling a little inspired to sing the anthem? Here are the words:

Joyful joyful we adore our Earth in all its wonderment
Simple gifts of nature that all join into a paradise
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love throughout all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love throughout all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world
